KYDEX Thermoforming for Custom OEM Products

CarryMold develops KYDEX thermoforming programs for brands, distributors and professional product teams. The capability supports custom holsters, knife sheaths, magazine carriers, equipment carriers, mounting systems and other viable formed-sheet products.

Short answer: KYDEX thermoforming heats an identified thermoplastic sheet, forms it over controlled tooling, cools it to stabilize geometry, then trims, drills, assembles and inspects the part. A production program must control the material, tool, process window, final geometry, hardware and functional acceptance together.

What is KYDEX thermoforming?

Thermoforming is a family of processes that reshape heated sheet against a tool. Vacuum, positive pressure and mechanical assistance can be used in different equipment configurations. KYDEX is a registered material family rather than a generic name for every formed plastic, so the quotation and bill of materials should identify the actual grade or agreed performance requirements.

From sheet to finished product

Stage Control inputs Buyer-facing evidence
Material release Manufacturer, grade, gauge, color, texture and sheet orientation Identified material and approved appearance reference
Heating Uniformity and grade-specific forming readiness Documented process window and repeatable surface condition
Forming Tool identity, part position, vacuum or pressure route and draw geometry Controlled molded surfaces and fit datums
Cooling and release Restraint, cooling sequence and demolding condition Stable geometry without premature release distortion
Trimming and assembly Outline, holes, slots, edges, hardware stack and assembly sequence Complete part matched to drawing and bill of materials
Inspection Critical dimensions, fit, retention, mounting, appearance and pack-out First article and approved production reference

Vacuum forming, pressure forming and matched tooling

Vacuum forming uses a pressure differential to draw sheet toward the tool. Pressure forming adds positive pressure above the sheet, while plug or matched-tool assistance can support material distribution in suitable designs. The best route depends on detail, depth, radii, undercuts, wall distribution, tolerance, surface expectation and order volume. A process name alone does not establish product capability.

For a detailed comparison, use the vacuum-versus-pressure forming guide. Buyers planning tooling should also review the thermoforming tooling guide.

Why formed-wall thickness is not uniform

As sheet stretches over three-dimensional geometry, material distribution changes. Deeper draws and tight radii may thin more than shallow areas. Nominal incoming gauge therefore cannot serve as a universal finished-wall requirement. The part design, forming route, tool geometry and functional load should determine where thickness matters and how it is checked.

Products developed through thermoforming

Custom holsters

Fit reference, coverage, retention, draw access and mounting are released as one configuration.

Holster manufacturing →

Knife and tool sheaths

Blade and point coverage, edge contact, handle access, drainage, eyelets and attachments are controlled.

Custom knife sheaths →

Carriers and mounts

Device access, retention, orientation, load path and belt, MOLLE or fixed-location interface drive the design.

Equipment carriers →

How a repeatable process is approved

A prototype is a learning unit, not automatic production approval. Release should connect an identified sample to the material specification, tooling revision, trim definition, hole pattern, hardware stack, functional criteria, visual limits and packaging configuration. The process-window guide, first-article checklist and golden-sample guide explain the supporting evidence.

What to send for a thermoforming review

Share the application, physical reference or usable CAD/drawing data, critical surfaces, material and appearance target, mounting and hardware, expected quantity by SKU, destination market, packaging needs and desired schedule. Mark unknown parameters as development decisions instead of guessing them.

Frequently asked questions

Is KYDEX thermoforming the same as vacuum forming?

No. Vacuum forming is one thermoforming route. Pressure and mechanically assisted methods are also possible depending on equipment and design.

Does CarryMold sell KYDEX sheet?

CarryMold focuses on custom finished-product development and manufacturing rather than retail sheet sales.

Can a photograph support a quotation?

It can explain the concept, but reliable review also needs geometry, fit reference, material, function, mounting, quantity and approval scope.

Does one process window fit every grade and part?

No. Grade, gauge, equipment, tooling, geometry and quality requirements affect the validated settings and evidence.
