What is the most important naming rule?
KYDEX® identifies materials supplied by SEKISUI KYDEX, while Boltaron® identifies SIMONA Boltaron materials. A supplier should record the manufacturer and exact grade in the quotation and bill of materials. A black textured thermoplastic sheet should not automatically be labeled as either brand.
How should OEM buyers compare them?
| Decision | Evidence to request | Product-level check |
|---|---|---|
| Grade identity | Manufacturer, grade and lot record | Matches released bill of materials |
| Thickness | Nominal value and manufacturer tolerance | Formed-wall behavior and stiffness |
| Processing | Grade-specific forming guidance | Detail, texture and repeatability |
| Environment | Relevant property and test documents | Application-specific validation |
| Appearance | Color, texture and gloss controls | Approved formed sample |
What do the manufacturers publish?
SEKISUI KYDEX describes vacuum, pressure and mechanical forming methods in its thermoforming fundamentals and publishes grade and thickness information through its technical resources. SIMONA Boltaron presents 4332 as a holster-grade sheet and publishes its own holster material information and forming guidance.
These sources are useful starting points, but typical material properties do not establish performance in every finished design. Geometry, draw depth, orientation, holes, hardware and processing can change the result.
How should substitutions be controlled?
Do not approve substitution solely because two sheets share nominal thickness and color. Review forming settings, surface result, critical dimensions, stiffness, fit, retention and application-specific exposure. Record the accepted alternate grade and the evidence required for future lots.
See the materials, colors and textures page, sheet sourcing guide and thickness guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is Boltaron a type of KYDEX?
No. They are separate branded material families from different manufacturers.
Which material is always better?
Neither can be declared universally better without an exact grade, requirement and validated product configuration.
Can an approved material be replaced without a new sample?
A documented review is needed. A revised formed sample is appropriate when the change can affect fit, appearance, processing or performance.
Start the comparison with an identified material
Use the KYDEX material and sheet guide to distinguish the material family, exact grade and finished-product approval before comparing it with Boltaron or another thermoplastic.
Specify the grade, then approve the formed result.
Share the application, target quantity and launch requirements. We will outline the most practical sampling path.
