Kydex Sheet Sourcing for Holster Manufacturing

A buyer-focused guide to specifying thermoplastic sheet grade, thickness, color and forming requirements for holster production.

Kydex Sheet Sourcing for Holster Manufacturing
Short answer: Do not specify material by color and nominal thickness alone. Record the exact resin or sheet grade, thickness tolerance, texture, color standard, lot controls and approved forming result.

Grade comes before appearance

Different thermoplastic sheet grades can have different forming, impact, chemical and flammability properties. If a branded material is required, name it in the quotation and bill of materials. KYDEX® is a registered trademark of SEKISUI KYDEX, LLC; not every thermoplastic sheet should be described as KYDEX.

Thickness is a controlled range

Nominal thickness is not the same as a zero-tolerance dimension. SEKISUI KYDEX publishes nominal thickness tolerances in its standard product specification. Product designers should account for the stated range and verify the formed part rather than assuming every sheet is identical.

Forming inputs matter

The material maker describes vacuum, drape and pressure-forming methods and emphasizes controlled heating and cooling in its forming guidance. For sourcing, the approved part and process window are therefore more useful than a material name alone.

Buyer specification checklist

  • Manufacturer and exact sheet grade
  • Nominal thickness and accepted tolerance
  • Color code, texture and gloss expectation
  • Surface-defect and contamination standard
  • Lot identification and substitution approval
  • Formed-part visual and dimensional criteria

Frequently asked questions

Is all thermoplastic holster sheet KYDEX?

No. KYDEX is a trademarked material family, and alternative sheets should be identified by their actual manufacturer and grade.

Should a buyer approve a color chip or a formed sample?

Both can help, but the formed sample better represents the final texture, geometry and process result.

Can the material be changed after approval?

A substitution should require documented review because forming behavior and finished performance may change.

Connect sheet sourcing to the material definition

Use the KYDEX material, sheet and thermoforming guide to explain the base material before assigning supplier identity, incoming checks and substitution controls.

Translate sheet gauge into product behavior

The KYDEX holster thickness guide compares common nominal gauges and explains why the formed geometry, hardware spacing and mounting load must be approved with the material specification.
