Golden Sample Approval for Custom Kydex Products

How OEM buyers can build a golden-sample process for custom Kydex holsters, molded carriers, hardware and packaging.

Golden Sample Approval for Custom Kydex Products
Short answer: A golden sample is the jointly approved physical reference for repeat production. It should be linked to a revision-controlled specification that identifies fit, thermoplastic grade, thickness, color, texture, hardware, mounting positions, retention behavior, workmanship and packaging.

What is a golden sample?

A golden sample is the released product configuration used by both buyer and supplier to interpret requirements that drawings and written tolerances cannot fully communicate. For a custom Kydex holster or equipment carrier, it helps define the combined result of forming, trimming, edge finishing and assembly.

The physical sample should not replace controlled documentation. It should carry a sample ID and revision that match the bill of materials, drawing, approval record and packaging standard.

What must be approved before production?

Approval area Record Verify on sample
Fit reference Exact model, configuration or controlled data Insertion, seating and clearance
Material Manufacturer, grade, nominal thickness, color and texture Formed appearance and stiffness
Geometry Profile, holes, slots and coverage Edges, access and alignment
Hardware Part, finish, length, spacer and locking method Assembly and adjustment range
Packaging SKU, label, included parts and pack-out Complete sellable configuration

How to run sample approval

  1. Identify the configuration. Record the carried item, accessories, battery or attachment platform that affect fit.
  2. Review function. Check insertion, removal, retention, control access, mounting stability and all specified adjustments.
  3. Review workmanship. Inspect trim profile, edge finish, eyelets, fasteners, surface condition and color against agreed limits.
  4. Record corrections. Convert comments into measurable changes and issue a new revision rather than marking an obsolete sample informally.
  5. Release matching copies. Buyer and supplier should retain clearly identified samples or equivalent controlled evidence.

How should changes after approval be handled?

A change to sheet grade, thickness, forming tool, hole pattern, hardware, packaging or fit reference can alter the approved result. Use a documented change request, assess affected checks and approve a revised sample when the change is material.

Connect the process to the private-label packaging and SKU approval guide, material specification guide and OEM manufacturing workflow.

Frequently asked questions

Is one golden sample enough for every SKU?

No. Each materially different fit, handedness, mounting or packaging configuration needs an identified approval basis.

Can photographs replace the physical sample?

Photographs are useful records, but they may not communicate fit, stiffness, edge feel or retention. Use them as supporting evidence.

When should the golden sample be renewed?

Renew it after an approved product change, when the reference is damaged or when the documented retention period requires replacement.
