OEM Kydex Holster MOQ, Sampling and Landed-Cost Planning

How buyers should compare MOQ, prototypes, pilot lots, unit pricing, packaging and landed cost for OEM Kydex products.

OEM Kydex Holster MOQ, Sampling and Landed-Cost Planning
Short answer: Separate one-time development cost from prototype, pilot and repeat-production pricing. MOQ is only one part of the commercial decision; compare the approved specification, included hardware, packaging, inspection, freight basis, duties and change costs on the same scope.

Why does MOQ vary?

Minimum order quantity can be driven by sheet purchasing, color availability, setup time, fixtures, hardware pack size, marking method and packaging print quantity. A standard black component may support a different commercial minimum from a custom color or printed retail box.

Plan the program in stages

Stage Purpose Commercial question
Development Define geometry, material and assembly Which engineering or tooling work is one-time?
Prototype Review fit and function How many revisions are included?
Pilot lot Verify production and pack-out Is pilot pricing different from repeat supply?
Repeat production Supply the released revision Which quantity breaks and lead times apply?

What belongs in landed cost?

Landed cost is broader than the supplier unit price. Depending on the agreed Incoterm and destination, include product, hardware, retail or bulk packaging, inspection, inland transport, export handling, international freight, insurance, customs duties, taxes and final delivery. Confirm which party owns each charge instead of adding a generic percentage.

How should quotations be compared?

  • Use the same material, thickness, hardware and mounting configuration.
  • State whether marking, labels, instructions and spare hardware are included.
  • Separate tooling and development from recurring unit price.
  • Record prototype and pilot quantities, revision allowance and schedule.
  • Compare freight basis, carton quantity and destination assumptions.
  • Ask how substitutions and post-approval changes are controlled.

Frequently asked questions

Can a buyer begin below the repeat-production MOQ?

A prototype or pilot phase may use a smaller quantity, with pricing that reflects setup and development work.

Does the lowest unit price mean the lowest landed cost?

No. Missing hardware, packaging, revisions, inspection or freight can change the total cost and launch risk.

Should a quotation guarantee future freight and duty?

Those charges can change. Record the pricing date, Incoterm, route and assumptions, then refresh them before shipment.
