What an OEM buyer is actually purchasing
A custom holster is not simply a formed sheet. It is a fitted assembly in which shell geometry, material thickness, edge profile, hardware, mounting position and retention behavior interact. The quotation should define those variables clearly enough that a later production lot can be checked against the approved sample.
The five-stage development path
- Application brief: intended use, fit reference, mounting method, target market and annual volume.
- Design definition: coverage, clearance, retention points, hardware pattern and branding zones.
- Prototype: a physical sample for fit, access, assembly and dimensional review.
- Pilot lot: a controlled quantity that verifies fixtures, inspection points and packaging.
- Repeat production: released specification, approved materials and lot-level checks.
Information to include in an RFQ
| Input | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Approved reference or 3D data | Controls fit and critical clearances |
| Carry and mounting format | Defines hole pattern, hardware and ride position |
| Expected volume | Changes fixture, labor and packaging assumptions |
| Material and finish | Affects forming, feel, appearance and cost |
| Destination market | Guides labeling, packing and documentation |
How to compare quotations
Ask whether sampling, revisions, hardware, packaging, inspection and freight are included. A low unit price can be misleading when the specification is incomplete or when change costs appear later.
Frequently asked questions
Can a program start with low volume?
Yes. A prototype and pilot phase can validate demand before a larger commitment. The commercial basis should still distinguish one-time development work from repeat-production pricing.
Do we need finished CAD?
Not always. A physical reference, dimensional brief and target features can start the discussion, but controlled data improves revision speed.
What should be approved before production?
Approve the physical sample, material, hardware, color, marking, packaging and inspection criteria in writing.
